Privacy and data transparency

Here's the short version. Most of what you save lives on our server, and the service and its operators can access it. Nightly inventories and Spot Checks are different: after you sign in, your first browser protects them automatically. Your browser locks the writing before it's saved, and we don't keep the key needed to read it. Existing entries move over too. If that move can't finish, we tell you and leave your originals unchanged.

We don't sell your data, and we don't share it with advertisers.

Who can see what

Protected inventories
Once automatic protection finishes, your browser locks your nightly inventories and Spot Checks before they reach us. We can't read that writing from what's stored on our server. We can still see that a record exists, its date, when it changed, and how big it is.
Everything else
Journal entries, gratitude lists, contacts, your other workbook tools, and your account details don't get that protection. Neither do older inventories until their move into protected storage finishes. These records have different protections. The service and its operators can access them.
Basic account information
We keep your email address, account and record dates, and simple counts of which screens and buttons get used. Those counts don't include recovery writing. Signed-in counts can be connected to your account. We stop counting when your browser sends Global Privacy Control or Do Not Track, and delete these counts after 90 days.
Sign-in and security records
We also keep records of sign-ins and security activity. These can include your email address, IP address, browser details, and when something happened. The service and authorized operators can access them. Database security records are deleted after 90 days; server and service-provider logs have separate limits explained in the privacy policy.
Services we rely on
A hosting company runs our server. An email service sends account emails, like confirmations and password resets. If you choose Google sign-in, Google confirms it's you and shares account details such as your email address and name. The privacy policy explains these services in more detail.

The companion and AI

Your saved inventories don't get sent to AI automatically.

The Recovery companion asks for your agreement before sending a message. If you agree and send one, that message goes through OpenRouter to OpenAI so it can answer you. Those services handle it under their own terms and may keep it. Leave inventory text and anything that identifies you out unless you're OK with that transfer. You can turn off this permission on the companion screen.

Browsers, devices, and your recovery key

Your first browser
Your first browser remembers inventory access automatically. After that, signing in there opens your writing without another setup step. Signing out closes your writing but keeps that browser's access for your next sign-in. Use Forget this browser to remove it.
Another browser or device
Sign in, then open its approval link or scan its code with a browser that already opens your inventories. Check the code on both screens and approve the browser you're using. Signing in on a new browser alone doesn't open protected writing.
Shared or public device
Choose Shared or public device before opening existing inventories there. Access lasts for that visit only. Start a new account on a personal browser, because the first browser remembers access automatically.
Optional recovery key
You can save one under Browser access and recovery. Keep it somewhere safe and private, outside the browser. If you lose every trusted browser and haven't saved a working recovery key, a password reset won't bring that writing back. We can't recover it for you either.
Lock or forget
Lock inventories and Forget this browser affect the browser you're using and its open tabs. They don't remove access on your other browsers.

Older records and saved copies

Existing nightly inventories and Spot Checks, plus their saved drafts and backup copies in the live account, move into protected storage together when you sign in. If the move can't finish, your originals stay exactly as they were and the inventory screen explains what needs attention.

This doesn't change server backups made before the move, or files you've already downloaded.

Your choices and data rights

Your agreements
We ask separately for your agreement to store recovery information and to send messages to the companion's AI services. You can see your agreements in Data & privacy. Delete your account to withdraw permission to store its records; turn off the companion's permission on its own screen.
Download your account
The account archive gives you a copy of the records held for your account. Protected inventories stay locked inside it. Other records can contain readable text, and the file has no password.
Download readable inventories
After unlocking, you can download your inventories as a readable file. You can also copy or share a single nightly inventory or Spot Check, or download it as a TXT or JSON file. Anything you download or share is outside our protection, so look after it like the writing itself.
Fix your details
Change your programs, recovery dates, and contacts in Settings. If something's wrong that you can't fix there, write to support.
Delete your account
This removes your live account and its linked records together. It can't pull back copies you've downloaded or shared, or companion messages you've already sent. Release backups are removed on a daily schedule after 30 days. If one is restored, recorded account deletions are applied again.
Ask us
You can ask support about getting, correcting, or deleting your data. Depending on where you live, you may have more legal rights than this page covers.

What protection can't cover

Your unlocked writing can be read by someone using your device. A file you've downloaded or shared is outside the website's protection. No website can promise complete protection.

Our commitment as AI changes

AI is changing what software can do, and what it takes to keep private writing private. We won't tell you anything is impossible to break. Here's what we will do:

  • Keep the protections on this page in place.
  • Only collect what the service actually needs.
  • Review changes that touch your data before they go out, and test the privacy controls.
  • Update this page when our practices change, or when AI changes what these protections mean.

Questions

Email support@sobrietyhelper.com about privacy or your data rights. Support doesn't need your recovery writing, recovery key, or password, and won't ask for them. Please don't send them.
